Subject of the lesson: Kyiv – the Capital of Ukraine.


Objectives:

  • to develop speaking, reading skills;

  • to develop thinking skills;

  • to practice writing;

  • to extend pupils’ knowledge about places of interest of Kyiv;

  • to teach pupils to work in groups;

  • to broaden their outlook;

  • to form the spirit of patriotism to our capital city.


Equipment: English, 9 Form (V.M. Plakhotnyk, R.Yu. Martynova, S.L. The Plan of the lesson


I. Introduction.

1. Aim.

Teacher: We are going to talk about Kyiv, the capital of our country. By the end of the lesson we should be able:

  • to activize the words and word-combinations learned at the previous lessons by using them in oral speech;

  • to show your ability of operating facts about Kyiv;

  • to read the text and to write a brief information about it.

2. Warm-up.

Teacher: Let’s sing a song “Kyiv of Mine” (Addition 1).

Greenery plays like an ocean,

Peace of day burns tonight.

Dearer grows my devotion

To the Dnipro’s steel heights.

1. Vocabulary Practice.

Teacher: I’d like to know how you imagine a big city. I will give you a definition and your task is to guess what starts for. Do you know the names of town’s features? Let’s check your knowledge (Addition 2).

3. Reading.

1) Pre-Reading Activities.

a) Matching the picture and captions.

Matching the pictures with the corresponding captions (Addition 4):

- The Saint Sophia Cathedral was built in 1037 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise to glorify the wisdom of Christianity (“Sophia” in Green means “wisdom”).

- The Saint Volodymyr Cathedral was built in 1882 in a new-Byzantine style by architect A. Baretti. It is a traditionally Slavic six-column church. It is crowned by seven cupols. The height to the top of the cross on the main Cupola is 48.9 m.

- The Saint Andrew’s Church was built in 1748 by architect Rastrelli.

- Kyiv Pecherska Lavra Monastery is one of the most famous sights of Kyiv. “Lavra” means the large monastery.

- Museum of Ukrainian Fine Arts contains a valuable collection of old Ukrainian icons, paintings and sculptures.

b) Teacher: Do you know what the following words mean? Do exercise 34 on page 13 (English, 9 Form V.M. Plakhotnyk, R.Yu. Martynova, S.L. Zakharova). Read the words, word-combinations and sentences with the translation. Match the English words with Ukrainian equivalents (Addition 5):

Teacher: You are divided into three groups. One pupil is from England, another from America. One of you are an interviewer. Speak about places of interest of Kyiv.

Dialogue 1. (Group No 1)

  • Excuse me. May I ask you a few questions?

  • No problem. It’s my pleasure.

  • Have you ever been to Kyiv before?

  • I haven’t been out of England before.

  • But I was in Kyiv 2 years ago and enjoyed the sights of Kyiv.

  • Kyiv is lovely with its churches, cathedrals and historical monuments.

  • What impressed you most all?

  • As for me, the Golden Gates, the Andrew’s Church, the monuments to Prince Volodymyr and Taras Shevchenko are worth seeing.

  • We liked your capital and all the sights.


Dialogue 2. (Group No 2)

  • Look at this picture. This is a view of Kyiv State University.

  • Oh, I see. I know it is named after T. Shevchenko, an Ukrainian poet.

  • You should know there is the monument to T. Shevchenko in front of the University.

  • It’s a pity, but you can’t see it. Do you know something about University?

  • Yes, I do. It was founded in 1834 and had only two faculties.

  • Yes, you are right. Now it is the biggest university.


Dialogue 3. (Group No 3)

  • We present you a certain place of our capital and your task will be to guess and name it.

  • This is a very famous and ancient institution. Many students from Ukraine, different countries of Europe, Asia and America study there. What is it? (Kyiv-Mohylyanska Academy)

  • It is one of the most ancient cathedrals in Kyiv. It was erected by unknown master in honour of Yaroslav the Wize

over the Pechenegs (St. Sophia).

  • It is a modern hotel. It has 17 stories. It was named after the very famous sister. (Lybid)

  • The main street of Kyiv. (Khreshchatic)


III. Concluding Part.

Teacher: At home you’ll write a letter to your foreign pen friend about Kyiv. Read the text “A Legend about Foundation of Kyiv” on pages 88-91.
