We have spoken a lot of about Ukraine, its geographical position, political system, the capital city. But today we are going to speak about cities and towns of Ukraine, about the place, where you were born and live in. Today we’ll speak about our town Zolochiv, reveal your attitude towards it, prepare your projects.

2. Warm-up.

Teacher: Let’s read the poem (Addition 1):

  1. Ukraine

My dear friends

I’d like to speak of land

In which you must defend

The slightest bend,

Where spreading is the steppe,

Where’s done the fist your step,

Where mother’s shortest nap

Was broken by your joyful clap.

b) Teacher: We often speak and hear about our Motherland. What synonyms to the word “Motherland” do you know? Let’s make the word-map (Addition 2):

As far as you have understood the word “Motherland” has two meanings:

- It is our country. It is Ukraine.

- It is the place where you were born. It is your town, your house. Usually this place is the best one in the world. There is no place like home. It is true.

And now answer my question. What does your Motherland begin with for you?

Pupil1: My Motherland begins with the dearest person in the world – my mother.

Pupil2: My Motherland begins with my home, my parents.

^ Pupil3: Motherland means to love my town, my family.

Pupil4: My Motherland is the history of our country, its outstanding people.

Pupil5: My Motherland is our wonderful nature.

Teacher: I agree with you that our Motherland begins with us. So, the aim of our lesson is to help you to understand, to watch, to feel the beauty around you in the place you know and live.

^ II. Main Part.

1. Visiting Card.

Teacher: Now, let’s proceed to the next task. I believe you’ll enjoy it. I have some pictures of different places of interest in differend cities and towns. You’re to name the sights and say in what city or town they are located. You may give some information about the places. This assignment will broden your outlook. (The pupils are shown the pictures of sights and they identify them. They give the name of the city (town).)

1) Project 1. Lviv. It’s history.

Pupil1: Poem “Lviv” (Addition 3).

From the northern steppes

To southern shining sea,

From the western heart,

Lvov, you call me.

Pupil2: Good afternoon, dear friends, I am a journalist of a well-known Ukrainian newspaper “News from Ukraine”. From time to time we prepare the materials about Ukrainian cities and towns, which haven’t been discovered yet by tourists. But they are really worth visiting and speaking about. This time we want to devote one page of our newspaper to Lviv.

^ Editor: Oh! We haven’t fresh topics. I think it must be a beautiful place, surrounded by thick forests, deep rivers, old names.

Pupil3: Lviv is a very old city with many places which have interesting history and names.

Pupil4: Lviv is the political, economical, industrial and cultural centre of the region. It is very beautiful with its old buildings, monuments and streets.

Editor: But first of all we want to take an interview with local authorities.

An Interview:

- Good morning! I am a journalist of the well-known newspaper “News from Ukraine”.

- Good morning! I am very happy to see you in our city.

- Can you tell me some facts from the history of Lviv.

- Certainly. Lviv has a rich and interesting history. It was founded in the 12th century, but people lived in this place eight thousand years ago. The famous Halicia-Volynian prince Danylo founded Lviv and named the town in honour of his son Lev. In 1356 the town received the Magdeburgian Law. Lviv became like a small country and it was good for people.

- Thank you very much.

Project 2. Places of interest in Lviv.

- Can you tell me about places of interest in Lviv.

- Yes, of course. The centre of Lviv is very beautiful. There you can see nice old houses, monuments, churches and narrow streets (The Church of St. Nicholas, the Ivan Fedoriv Museum, Porokhova Tower, the Bernardine Monastery complex, the Town Arsenal, Pharmacy Museum, the Boims’ Chapel). The old centre is one of the best in Europe.

- Thank you for your story.

2) Project 3. Zolochiv. Its History.

Pupil1: Zolochiv (Addition 4).

Town of Zolochiv

Is the town of mine

Churches, schools

Are here, we know

Sunny and tidy

And happy all time

People are pleasant

Wherever you go.

Містом іду і всміхаюся я,

То Батьківщина маленька моя.

Pupil2: Now we are in one of the towns of Lviv region; one of the beautiful towns of Western Ukraine – Zolochiv. I ask some people to tell us something interesting from the history of their town.

Pupil3: The first known mention about Zolochiv is dated by year 1423. Since then Zolochiv has been known as the fortress of boyars. Till the 18th century Zolochiv was an independent town. In 1523 it gained the Magdeburgian Law. In the 15-17 centuries Zolochiv was the forpost of Lviv.

Pupil4: Zolochiv, as all the towns of that period, had a fortress out of the limits of the town while the town itself possessed defending constructions, fortress, churches, monasteries.

^ Pupil2: Thank you for your information.

Project 4. Places of interest in Zolochiv.

Pupil1: I want to tell you that there are many places of interest in our town: Polish Cathedral of the 18th century, church of Christ Resurrection of the 19th century, St. Nikola’s church of the 16th century, the old castle of the 17th century. There are many monuments in our town: monument to T. Shevchenko, monument to M. Shashkevich onVicheva Square, monument to V. Chornovil on Independence Square.

Pupil5: Our town! It’s so beautiful, the people are so generous, good-natured, hospitable and talented. I can’t imagine my life without my town, my people. The words “East or West-home is best” are coming from my heart. In our town seven wonders are present. Only sometimes we don’t want to notice them.

The First Wonder.

Pupil6: Our castle was built in the 17th century by the Polish king Yan Sobesky. Now it is the museum.

The Second Wonder.

Pupil1: There is a Chinese Palace in our castle which is the only in Ukraine. There is one more in Germany which is called San-Susi. The tea ceremony takes place there.

The Third Wonder.

Pupil2: Our St. Nikola’s church of the 16th century is beautiful. It underwent great changes during the reconstruction in the 18th century. Its iconostasis is one of the most brilliant examples of the Lviv Baroque sculpture. The painting on the church walls are made by Modest Gosenko, famous Lviv painter.

The Fourth Wonder.

Pupil3: One of the wonders is the Polish Cathedral of the 18th century. It was built in Baroque style. The big clock is at the top of Cathedral.

The Fifth Wonder.

Pupil4: The greatest wonder is Markiyan Shashkevich (1811-1843). He was a priest and poet, public leader and educator. There is a nice monument to M. Shashkevich onVicheva Square in Zolochiv. The main street is named after him. He was born not far from Zolochiv in the village of Pidlyssia.

The Sixth Wonder.

Pupil5: Among the memorial places we can not but mention municipal cemetery. There we can find the graves of Sichovi Strilsi and buried of the Polish rebellions who in 1918-1920 fought against each other. There are also interesting examples of the works of the Italian artists.

The Seventh Wonder.

Pupil6: One more wonder is its nature. I like nature of my native land. It always makes a deep impression on me. Zolochiv stands on the river Zolochivka. I love the nature of my town. I love Zolochiv.

^ Editor: Thank you. And our last question what do you want to wish your people on the page of our newspaper.

Pupil1: I want to wish them good health, happiness and hope for better life.

Teacher: It was amassing to listen to your projects about Lviv, Zolochiv. Thank you for your love, care and your willingness to share it with us. I fully agree with you that our Motherland begins for you here in our native town. And now let’s sing a song “Where Does Your Homeland Begin For You?”

Word by Matussovsky

Translated by Fedulova

Music by Basner

Say where does your Homeland begins for you?

With pictures on ABC cards,

With old and reliable friends of yours,

Who live in the neighboring yards?

But maybe it starts with the cradlesong

Your mother once hummed low and sweet,

The memories which no one can take from you,

Whatever ordeals you may meet.
