READING

The Reading section consists of five texts of varying length and nature selected to test a wide range of reading skills and strategies which deal with issues that are recognizably appropriate and accessible to students. The time allocated to give answers is two hours.


The texts are intended to cover a range of recently published materials and to appear authentic in form, presentation and content. They focus on:

  • Forming an overall impression by skimming the text.

  • Retrieving specific information by scanning the text.

  • Demonstrating an understanding of the text as a whole.

  • Selecting relevant information from the text required to perform the task.

  • Understanding structural and lexical appropriacy in texts.


Each text is accompanied by a set of tasks:

  1. Text One: a gapped-text (extracts for re-insertion into the text).

  2. Text Two: four-option multiple choice questions.

  3. Text Three: multiple matching

  4. Text Four: word formation

  5. Text Five: four-option lexical cloze



The tasks test the student’s understanding of various aspects of the text, e.g. the main point(s) of the text, the theme/gist of the text, the writer’s opinion or attitude, the detailed content, vocabulary and grammar.
